KATHMANDU: The Supreme Court has ordered authorities to provide the legal basis and reasons for the detention of medical entrepreneur Durga Prasai.
A single bench of Justice Hari Prasad Phuyal issued a show-cause notice on Wednesday, September 30, while hearing a habeas corpus petition filed against his detention.
Prasai’s wife, Uma Prasai, filed the petition at the Supreme Court on Tuesday, claiming that her husband was being held illegally.
In response, the court has directed the Nepal Police headquarters, the Cyber Bureau in Bhotahity, and other concerned agencies to submit a written explanation regarding the detention.
Earlier, the Kathmandu District Court had granted permission to the police on Sept. 28 to keep Prasai in custody for three days to facilitate an investigation into alleged cybercrime activities. A team from the Nepal Police Cyber Bureau had arrested Prasai from his residence in Bhaktapur.
Police sought the remand period to investigate allegations of cybercrime conducted through online platforms. Prasai has been arrested and released multiple times in the past in connection with various other allegations.
