KATHMANDU: Three more bodies were recovered on Wednesday following an avalanche on Himlung Himal in Manang last Sunday. With these recoveries, the death toll has reached seven, while nine people remain missing.
Assistant Chief District Officer of Manang, Krishna Prasad Paudel, stated that the three bodies were brought to Chame from the Himlung base camp on Wednesday evening. The bodies are scheduled to be transported to the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital in Kathmandu on Thursday morning. The victims identified on Wednesday are 58-year-old Ash Gurung from Gorkha, 21-year-old Suraj Rai from Khotang, and 57-year-old Kalam Budha from Rukum.
A rescue team from the Nepal National Mountain Guide Association is continuing the search operation. Association President Tul Singh Gurung explained that the team members were buried when an avalanche struck unexpectedly from the steep terrain above. He stated, “We have recovered three bodies from the avalanche today. We are putting all our efforts into searching for those missing in the landslide.”
Previously, the bodies of Chhevi Bhote and Pasang Bhote from Sankhuwasabha were recovered on Sunday, followed by the bodies of 30-year-old Birendra Gurung from Gorkha and Ghanshyam Rai from Khotang on Monday. Among those still missing are seven individuals from Himalayan Holiday Company and one from Expedition Imagine Company. Himlung Himal is a popular mountain often climbed before attempting to summit Mount Everest.
