KASKI: The District Administration Office, Kaski, has imposed a fine of Rs 200,000 on Mohit Traders, located in Nayabazar, Pokhara Metropolitan City-9, after discovering that the business was refining and repackaging expired food items for sale in the market.
A joint market inspection led by the District Administration Office today found most of the food items displayed for sale at the shop expired and unfit for consumption due to insect infestation; the shop’s hygiene standards were also found to be extremely poor. Action was taken in accordance with the law after it was confirmed that the business was reprocessing expired goods such as rice and repackaging them for sale, according to Assistant Chief District Officer Chitraangat Baral.
Upon discovering the expired and insect-infested food items, the inspection team halted further sales and ordered the proper disposal of the goods, while the Metropolitan City confiscated the refining machine.
The administration also inspected several other large food stores in the market. According to the administration, the inspections covered aspects such as product expiry dates, quality, storage conditions, price lists, hygiene standards, and potential risks to consumer health.
Assistant Chief District Officer Baral stated that regular and surprise inspections would be made more effective, keeping in mind the potential for traders to seek undue profit and the risk of artificial shortages and black marketing due to the increased demand for food items during upcoming major festivals like Dashain and Tihar.
