KATHMANDU: Tribhuvan University (TU) has allocated a budget of Rs 30.87 billion for the upcoming fiscal year 2083/084. The university assembly approved the budget on Thursday, marking a 9.77 percent increase compared to the previous year.
TU Registrar Dr. Rabindra Siwakoti stated that the university expects to cover 49.38 percent of the total budget, amounting to Rs 15.24 billion, through internal resources, while 50.62 percent, or Rs 15.62 billion, is expected from the Nepal government. However, the government has allocated only Rs 7.31 billion in grants for the current fiscal year, which is Rs 4.80 billion less than the previous year.
The university reported a projected deficit of Rs 8.31 billion due to increased obligations from salary hikes and allowances for teachers and staff. TU is currently seeking government intervention to secure the necessary funds. The university has requested the Prime Minister, who serves as the Chancellor, to arrange for the missing funds to ensure mandatory expenses are covered.
Of the total budget, 86.14 percent is allocated for operational expenses, while 13.86 percent is designated for capital expenditure. Research and development received Rs 43.75 million, representing 1.41 percent of the total budget. Additionally, Rs 217.78 million has been set aside for capacity building, training, and seminars for faculty and staff, with Rs 80 million allocated for information technology and administrative management.
The university has implemented a new salary scale and a 10 percent monthly incentive allowance effective from July 17, 2026. To control spending beyond budget limits, the university has mandated that any expenditure from internal sources requires prior approval from the central office.
