NEW YORK: U.S. President Donald Trump is expected to outline his administration’s achievements in war and ongoing peace efforts during his address to the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday.
He is likely to justify the conflict with Iran, highlight his initiatives to end the war in Gaza, and discuss efforts to include more Arab nations in the Abraham Accords. Trump is also expected to address the economic impact caused by disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz.
Daniel Forti of the International Crisis Group noted that Trump may present himself as both a peacekeeper and a proponent of military action. Analysts anticipate he may also reiterate his past criticisms of the United Nations. Previously, Trump expressed frustration over technical issues with an escalator and teleprompter at the UN headquarters.
UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric confirmed that the escalator has been inspected and new teleprompter arrangements have been made for the U.S. delegation.
On the sidelines of the assembly, Trump is scheduled to meet with British Prime Minister Andy Burnham, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, and Venezuelan acting President Delcy Rodriguez.
The high-level meeting will focus on global security, economic challenges, and artificial intelligence. Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who is scheduled to speak before Trump, has stated he will urge the U.S. president not to interfere in Brazil’s upcoming elections. The high-level session is taking place in New York from Sept. 22 to 28.
