KATHMANDU: The last rites of 12 individuals from Madhyabindu Municipality, East Nawalparasi, who went missing after being swept away by floods, have been performed. As the bodies could not be recovered, the families conducted the funeral using Kush effigies at the banks of the Narayani River in Amaltari.
The victims were employees at the Tenzing Sherpa Hydropower project in Timure, Rasuwa, and went missing during the floods on Aug. 26. According to the District Administration Office, those missing included Hem Bahadur Chaudhary, Husan Bahadur Tharu, and Kaliram Mahato Tharu from Madhyabindu-1. From Madhyabindu-5, the missing individuals were Jeevan BK, Gangaram Mukhiya, Bishal Mukhiya, Sitaram Mahato, Yuddha Mahato, Evadev Mahato, Numanarayan Mahato, Kewal Prasad Mahato, and Tej Bahadur Tharu.
Following an extensive search that failed to locate the missing, the families proceeded with the traditional funeral rites. Madhyabindu Mayor Bhimlal Adhikari stated that the municipality has decided to provide Rs 100,000 in relief to each affected family to cover search expenses and funeral costs.
