KATHMANDU: Police have arrested two individuals for allegedly assaulting Dr. Saroj Sah, who was on duty at the Provincial Hospital in Janakpur. The District Police Office in Dhanusha identified the suspects as 20-year-old Bijay Mukhiya from Aurahi Rural Municipality-2 and 26-year-old Sudhira Mukhiya Bin from Janakpur Sub-Metropolitan City-8.
Police spokesperson and DSP Om Prakash Khanal stated that both suspects are being investigated under Section 3 (c) of the Security of Health Workers and Health Institutions Act, 2066. The Dhanusha District Court has granted a three-day remand to facilitate further investigation. Under this act, offenders can face up to three years in prison, a fine of up to Rs 300,000, or both. Authorities are continuing efforts to identify and apprehend other individuals involved in the incident.
The assault occurred last Thursday when relatives of a patient at the hospital’s birthing center accused Dr. Sah of medical negligence during a surgery. Following the attack, doctors at the hospital launched a protest. They condemned the violence, stating that if there were concerns regarding medical treatment, the appropriate legal channels should have been followed rather than resorting to physical assault against healthcare workers.
