KATHMANDU: A Nepali mountain guide and a German climber of Indian origin have died following an avalanche on Mount Manaslu. The two went missing on Saturday night after a massive avalanche struck their tent at Camp-3.
Mohan Lamsal, managing director of the expedition organizer, Makalu Adventure, stated that the victims, climber Dhruva Jyoti Guha and guide Fursemba Sherpa, had proceeded toward Camp-3 from Camp-2 despite adverse weather conditions. Rescue teams later discovered their bodies buried under seven feet of snow. Six other climbers participating in the same expedition opted to return from Camp-2 due to the worsening weather and remain safe.
Rescue personnel are currently working to transport the bodies to base camp. If weather permits, the bodies are expected to be brought to Kathmandu on Monday. Guha was a resident of Germany, while Sherpa was an experienced guide from the Makalu region.
This incident brings the death toll on Manaslu to four this season. Previously, a climber from Singapore and another Nepali guide died in separate incidents. Standing at 8,163 meters, Manaslu is the world’s eighth-highest mountain and is known for its challenging terrain and unpredictable weather patterns.
