KATHMANDU: Two major hydropower projects in Lamjung have resumed operations after being shut down on Sunday morning due to high water levels and increased flow in the Marsyangdi River. Both the 70-megawatt Middle Marsyangdi and the 50-megawatt Upper Marsyangdi A hydropower projects have restarted electricity generation.
The 70-megawatt Middle Marsyangdi project, located in Besisahar Municipality-1, Dalal, resumed operations on Monday afternoon. The facility was fully shut down on Sunday morning as a safety precaution following a significant rise in the river’s water level and flow. Project Chief Tara Datta Bhattarai stated that production was halted to allow water to be diverted safely into the river. With the river flow returning to normal levels, power generation has resumed, and there is currently no risk to the facility, according to Bhattarai. The Middle Marsyangdi plant operates using two 35-megawatt turbines.
Similarly, the 50-megawatt Upper Marsyangdi A hydropower project, based in Marsyangdi Rural Municipality-8, Bhulbhule, returned to full operation at 11:50 a.m. on Monday. Engineer Karna Adhikari confirmed that power generation restarted after completing necessary technical maintenance, cleaning, and management tasks. Both projects had suspended electricity production to prioritize safety when the river flow became hazardous. Once the water levels decreased, the plants conducted the required technical assessments before resuming operations.
