KATHMANDU: The Nepal Telecommunications Authority has announced that the operating license of United Telecom Limited has been automatically cancelled. The regulator issued a notice on Monday confirming the expiry of the license.
The company had received its basic telephone service license on Sept. 5, 2016. According to the authority, the license was cancelled because the company failed to submit an application for renewal along with the required fees within the timeframe stipulated by Section 25 of the Telecommunications Act, 1997. The cancellation took effect on Sept. 5, 2026, in accordance with Section 25(5) of the Act and Rule 12(4) of the Telecommunications Regulations, 1997.
Following the expiration of the license, the assets of the service provider will be transferred to the Government of Nepal. This process is governed by Rule 34a of the Telecommunications Service Provider Asset Management Regulations, 2022, which mandates that assets related to telecommunications services are automatically transferred to the state upon the cancellation of a license. The authority has directed United Telecom Limited to hand over its telecommunications infrastructure, systems, and network to the regulator immediately.
