HONG KONG: A construction worker died on Friday after falling from scaffolding at a building site in Hong Kong. The incident occurred at approximately 11:30 a.m. on Yau Chau Street in Sham Shui Po.
According to police, the worker was rushed to Caritas Medical Centre after the fall but was pronounced dead at the facility. Authorities have classified the incident as an industrial accident. The Labour Department has launched an investigation, and police stated that the exact cause of death will be confirmed following a post-mortem examination.
The Association for the Rights of Industrial Accident Victims identified the deceased as a 50-year-old sub-subcontractor who was experienced in scaffolding work. The organization’s chief executive, Fay Siu Sin, stated that the worker was building scaffolding to repair water leakage issues when a support bracket allegedly gave way. The victim is survived by a son and a daughter.
This marks the 19th fatal industrial accident in the construction sector this year. Following the incident, Siu called on the employers, main contractors, and subcontractors involved to provide necessary support to the victim’s family. She also urged relevant authorities and employers to conduct a serious review of safety measures to prevent further accidents in the workplace.
