KATHMANDU: Egg prices have reached a record high in Nepal as a sharp decline in production has tightened supply in the market, with prices rising by up to Rs 75 per crate in the past month.
According to the Nepal Layers Poultry Farmers Association, around 1.3 million layer chickens have been lost nationwide due to bird flu, extreme heat and rising production costs, contributing to the decline in egg production.
Association Secretary Madan Pokharel said egg prices have increased by up to Rs 75 per crate compared with July 22. The price of XL eggs has reached Rs 590 per crate, while large eggs cost Rs 575, medium eggs Rs 520 and small eggs Rs 448.
Egg prices had previously never exceeded Rs 570 per crate, according to the association.
Daily production has also declined from around 28,000 cartons to approximately 22,000 cartons, further contributing to the rise in prices.
