KATHMANDU: The government has moved forward with plans to resume power purchase agreements (PPAs), with the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) forming a committee to prepare the necessary criteria.
A meeting of the NEA Board of Directors chaired by Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation Minister Biraj Bhakta Shrestha on Thursday decided to form a subcommittee under NEA board member Anshukiran Shahi to prepare the PPA criteria.
The subcommittee has been given seven days to prepare the criteria and submit it to the board.
The panel includes the deputy director general of the Department of Electricity Development, Shaligram Bhandari from the Ministry of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation, and expert Ribaj Sharma as members. The director of NEA’s Power Trading Department will serve as member-secretary.
The committee will study the existing basis for signing PPAs with licensed power producers, along with recommendations made by a committee formed by the Energy Ministry, in line with provisions of the Economic Act 2026.
The move is expected to pave the way for the NEA to resume signing PPAs with eligible power projects once the new criteria are approved.
