KATHMANDU: Ram Karki, a leader of the Pragatisheel Loktantrik Party (Pralopa), has announced his resignation from the party.
Karki had joined Pralopa along with Janardan Sharma after leaving the CPN (Maoist Centre). His departure comes amid growing internal disunity within the party.
Following the fragmentation of Pralopa, Sharma has reportedly begun exploring cooperation with Madhes-centric political parties. Karki and others had left the Maoist Centre after expressing dissatisfaction with Pushpa Kamal Dahal “Prachanda” over the party’s unification with CPN (Unified Socialist).
In a statement, Karki reflected on the circumstances surrounding the formation of Pralopa.
“Most of us who gathered in the Pragatisheel Loktantrik Party had only recently come out of parties trapped in parliamentary stagnation. For many of us, politics became synonymous with elections. Had we focused on a progressive movement instead of electoral politics at that time, the outcome might have been different,” he said.
Karki noted that the party had become divided within a very short period. He argued that although Pralopa had emerged with a declaration to dissolve old political structures, it lost its ideological footing after becoming caught up in electoral competition.
He further stated, “One group of leaders held the hand of one old party, while another group joined hands with a different old party. In this way, a party that had already disintegrated ideologically during the election period has now become organizationally divided as well. This division is natural, and I personally feel satisfied that it has occurred in a civil manner.”
Karki also clarified that he had never held any executive position in the party since its inception.
He said he would now remain associated with the Marxist School of Praxis, an ideological initiative currently being developed through the efforts of young activists.
