Government delays insurance authority chairman appointment despite 51 applications

KATHMANDU: Nearly two months after inviting applications through an open competition, the government has yet to move forward with appointing the chairperson of the Nepal Insurance Authority, leaving the top post vacant for nearly a year.

A recommendation committee led by National Planning Commission Vice-Chair Dr. Gunakar Bhatta received 51 applications after calling for candidates between May 27 and June 2. However, no shortlist has been prepared for interviews or professional presentations, and the names of applicants have not been made public.

Finance Ministry spokesperson Amrit Lamsal said the evaluation process is still underway, adding that the high number of applications may have contributed to the delay. A committee source said a meeting is expected later this week.

The Cabinet formed the recommendation committee on April 21. Under the selection process, the committee must shortlist five candidates, interview them, and recommend three names to the Cabinet, which will make the final appointment.

The authority has been operating under acting leadership since former chairperson Sharad Ojha was dismissed in August 2025. Officials say the prolonged vacancy has affected regular operations and delayed major policy decisions.
