KATHMANDU: The Education Department of Kathmandu Metropolitan City has issued a 35-day notice seeking documents and explanations from 92 institutional (private) schools facing possible cancellation of their operating permits or approvals.
The department has directed schools that were legally authorised to operate within the metropolitan area but are now considered liable for cancellation to submit the required documents and details within 35 days.
Education Department Chief Navaraj Dhakal said the notice was issued under Section 36 of the Education Act 2018, which provides for the cancellation of a school’s permission or approval under certain circumstances.
He said the process of cancelling the schools’ approvals would move forward if they fail to provide a satisfactory response within the stipulated period.
The metropolitan city had previously decided to revoke the approvals of institutional schools that were registered but were no longer operating. The decision followed field inspections of schools that existed only on paper and had ceased actual operations.
A meeting of the Municipal Education Committee had decided to initiate the cancellation process for such schools.
The metropolitan city has also been taking regulatory action concerning the operation of private schools, including the addition of classes and subjects, changes to school names, relocation and changes in ownership, in accordance with prevailing laws and prescribed standards.
