NEA’s pre-tax profit drops by Rs 3.87 billion amid rising forex liabilities

A A+ A-

KATHMANDU: The Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) recorded a sharp decline in pre-tax net profit for fiscal year 2025/26, falling by Rs 3.87 billion to Rs 5.04 billion, down from Rs 8.91 billion in 2024/25 and Rs 13.31 billion in 2023/24.

The utility attributed the drop primarily to a 272.86 percent surge in foreign exchange liabilities—which reached Rs 11.51 billion due to currency fluctuations—alongside higher interest payments and depreciation costs.

Despite the squeeze on net earnings, core performance grew: total revenue reached Rs 166 billion, with electricity sales rising 18.20 percent to Rs 148.62 billion, driving gross profit up 13.17 percent to Rs 31.23 billion and operating profit up 7.28 percent to Rs 24.81 billion.

Total assets expanded 8.9 percent to Rs 779.19 billion, supported by Rs 206.26 billion invested in ongoing capital projects.

Operationally, online tariff collections rose to Rs 40.99 billion, average customer consumption reached 2,088 units, and 217.3 million units of free electricity were provided to nearly 2.59 million low-income domestic users.
