KATHMANDU: Young leaders of the Nepali Congress have launched a campaign aimed at uniting the party, warning that prolonged internal disputes have pushed the organization toward a serious crisis.
The leaders gathered in Baneshwor, Kathmandu, on Sunday and announced the start of the “Campaign to unite the nation and the Congress” under the slogan “Congress for the nation, unity for the Congress.”
Speaking at a press conference, former Nepal Students’ Union president Nain Singh Mahar said long-standing disagreements, mistrust and internal factionalism had weakened the party organization.
He said the Nepali Congress was currently undergoing a critical test of unity and stressed that democracy could not be strengthened without a united Congress.
Mahar stated that Nepal’s political history had repeatedly shown that when the Nepali Congress becomes weak, democracy also weakens, and when the party is divided, anti-democratic and regressive forces gain space to dominate national interests.
According to him, the unity of the Nepali Congress is not merely a matter of partisan interest but a national responsibility linked to the protection of democracy and the stability of the country.
Referring to the current national situation, he said Nepal was facing multiple challenges. He mentioned that communal tensions that began in Sunsari and spread to several districts of Madhesh had resulted in loss of lives, significant property damage and a serious impact on social harmony.
He also pointed to the worsening economic slowdown, rising unemployment, increasing youth migration abroad, a crisis of good governance and growing difficulties in people’s livelihoods.
Another leader, Ranjit Karn, said the party should not be divided at a time when the country was going through a difficult period. He said there was a need to unite the Congress when ordinary citizens were suffering, adding that if the party became internally weak and divided, the country would also become weak.
Leaders participating in the program urged both the establishment faction and the rival faction within the Nepali Congress to come together in the interest of party unity and national stability.
