Government reaches three-point agreement with Garima’s parents

KATHMANDU: The government and the family of Garima Chaudhary, a three-year-old girl from Jitpur Simara Sub-Metropolitan City-1 in Bara district, have reached a three-point agreement over the heinous crime committed against her.

The agreement was reached during a discussion held at the Ministry of Home Affairs on Saturday evening involving Home Minister Sudan Gurung, ministers from the concerned ministries, government officials, and Garima’s parents.

As part of the agreement, the government will review existing legal provisions related to offenses and punishments in heinous criminal cases in response to public concerns. A report containing recommendations for drafting new legislation will be prepared within seven days.

The Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs will form a seven-member Garima Justice Commitment Committee to conduct the review. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Infrastructure Development has agreed to coordinate with the local government and initiate the construction of a statue of Garima in accordance with her family’s wishes.

The Home Minister’s Secretariat said the parties have also agreed to conduct Garima’s funeral according to the family’s customs and traditions.

The agreement was signed on behalf of the Government of Nepal by Home Minister Sudan Gurung, Minister for Infrastructure Development Sunil Lamsal, Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Sobita Gautam, Minister for Women, Children, Gender and Sexual Minorities and Social Security Sita Badi, and Minister for Agriculture, Forest and Environment Geeta Chaudhary.

Garima’s father, Manoj Kumar Chaudhary, and mother, Manmati Chaudhary, signed the agreement on behalf of the victim’s family.

The agreement commits the government and the family to advancing the judicial process related to the incident and addressing the demands raised by Garima’s family.
