Chief Justice Sharma stresses faster justice delivery

A A+ A-

BAGLUNG: Chief Justice Manoj Kumar Sharma has said the judiciary’s primary focus is on delivering justice more swiftly, stressing that public confidence in the courts can grow only when people receive timely justice.

Speaking at a programme in Baglung on Saturday, Sharma said the judiciary must work to clear old cases and reduce the backlog to zero.

Sharma was in Baglung as part of an inspection of the current condition of the courts, their physical infrastructure and the state of judicial proceedings at the Baglung Bench of the Pokhara High Court.

He said the judiciary was increasingly adopting technology to speed up the delivery of justice.

Sharma inspected the newly constructed building of the Pokhara High Court’s Baglung Bench and the Baglung District Court. The facilities were recently brought into operation at a cost of Rs 790 million.

During an interaction with lawyers from the Baglung unit of the High Court Bar Association, Sharma said lawyers have an important role to play in raising public awareness about legal and judicial matters.

He said resolving cases as much as possible at the district court level would make the justice system more accessible and convenient for the public.

“I found that there are very few cases that are more than two years old, but we need to bring that number down to zero,” Sharma said. “The reduction in old cases at the Baglung Bench of the Pokhara High Court, along with the delivery of services from a well-equipped building, has made the process more convenient.”

Sharma reiterated that people must receive justice without unnecessary delay.

“People will feel that they have received justice only when they get it promptly,” he said, adding that the judiciary needs to become technologically advanced.

He also expressed concern over the rise in cases related to child marriage, divorce and rape across the country, saying the increase in such cases was not a positive development.

According to Sharma, making courts technology-friendly is essential to delivering justice quickly and on time.
