ROLPA: Rescue teams have recovered the bodies of 10 people killed in the landslide that struck Uwa Kotalbara in Thawang Rural Municipality-5, Rolpa on Wednesday night.
According to police, five bodies were discovered at the disaster site, while another five were recovered downstream in Pyuthan after being carried away by floodwaters. The deceased include victims aged between five and 85 years.
The landslide, which brought down a huge mass of mud and debris, buried 11 houses in the settlement late Wednesday. Authorities said three people are still unaccounted for, and search efforts are ongoing.
Two survivors who sustained serious injuries are receiving treatment in Butwal. Himal Pun Magar, 22, and Sanjay Gharti Magar, 25, managed to escape the landslide and later informed police about the incident through the emergency hotline 100.
Those found at the scene were identified as Shanti Pun Magar, 18; Kamal Bahadur Pun Magar, 60; Manrakhi Pun Magar, 80; Dal Bahadur Pun Magar, 75; and Hastakala Roka Magar, 85.
Police Inspector Krishna Shrestha, information officer at the District Police Office, said five additional bodies were recovered from different points along the Lungri Khola in Rolpa and the Madi River in Pyuthan.
The victims recovered in Pyuthan were identified as Jun Kumari Pun Magar (also known as Bishnu Pun), 38; Ashok Pun Magar, 5; Bal Bahadur Pun Magar, 80; Mani Pun Magar, 66; and Mahendra Gharti, 34.
The two injured men were first treated at the Primary Health Center in Sulichowr before being transferred to Provincial Hospital Butwal for advanced treatment. Inspector Shrestha said the landslide also buried nine houses, a mobile phone shop, two sheds, and a church.
