Heavy rainfall expected in hills and mountains today

KATHMANDU: Active monsoon conditions continue to affect Nepal, and the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has forecast rainfall in several provinces, with warnings of possible heavy precipitation in parts of the hills and mountains.

At present, most hilly and mountainous regions are experiencing generally cloudy weather. Madhes Province and the Terai areas of Koshi Province are partly cloudy, while the Terai belts of Gandaki, Lumbini and Sudurpaschim provinces remain mostly clear. Light to moderate rain accompanied by thunder and lightning is occurring in parts of Koshi, Bagmati, Gandaki and Karnali provinces.

The Department said that during the afternoon, the hilly and mountainous areas of Koshi, Bagmati, Gandaki, Lumbini, Karnali and Sudurpaschim provinces are expected to remain generally cloudy, whereas the Terai of Madhes Province and some parts of Sudurpaschim Province will be partly cloudy.

Moderate to heavy rainfall is likely in some hilly and mountainous areas of Koshi, Bagmati, Gandaki and Lumbini provinces, and at a few places in Karnali and Sudurpaschim provinces. Similar rainfall is also possible in a few Terai areas of Madhes, Koshi, Bagmati, Gandaki and Lumbini provinces, as well as at one or two places in the Terai of Sudurpaschim Province.

For tonight, the Department has forecast generally cloudy conditions across the country. Moderate to heavy rain accompanied by thunder and lightning is likely in some hilly and mountainous areas of Koshi, Bagmati and Gandaki provinces and in parts of Lumbini, Karnali and Sudurpaschim provinces. Similar weather is expected in some Terai areas of Koshi, Bagmati, Gandaki, Lumbini and Sudurpaschim provinces, while Madhes Province may receive rainfall at isolated places.

The Department has urged residents to remain vigilant, warning that heavy rainfall could raise the risk of flash floods, floods, landslides and soil erosion. Such weather conditions may also disrupt daily life, agriculture, health services, tourism, mountaineering, and road and air transport services.
